President’s Letter

As we near the half-way mark of programming this year, I would like to thank the many active board and committee members who are bringing us such enlightening programs. We have been particularly pleased by the success of our two joint programs in which we teamed with other prominent real estate groups, CCIM CT Chapter, SIOR CT/Western MA Chapter, and CoreNet Global Connecticut Westchester Chapter. Both the program content and networking were great!

CREW CT member, Sharon L. Alleman, CFP, Senior Vice President-Wealth Management at UBS in Hartford, was featured speaker on May 23, hosted at Red Thread. Members came to gain knowledge about managing their finances, with an emphasis on retirement saving and planning.

A few tips from Sharon were:

  • The main reason people procrastinate in planning and saving is that retirement seems so far away
  • You have to have a plan and it is never too early to start.  Think deliberately for yourself, your heirs, and your philanthropy.  Also plan for the unexpected.
  • Asset allocation is always important and will change over time.  The growth from investing in stocks has historically outperformed bonds, but there is more risk.
  • Nothing can make up for the value of compounding; set aside money early and on a continuing basis
  • When asked "how much will I need in retirement," Sharon responded that it depends on your expected budget at retirement
  • Life insurance, disability insurance, and long-term care insurance are important elements of your financial mix. Note that a little-known fact is that disability insurance benefits from an employer-paid policy are taxable, while benefits from a privately paid policy are not
  • When planning for college savings, fund, but do not overfund 529 plans
  • Everyone must have a will and keep it updated

Sharon indicated her willingness to take calls after the event and send out her handouts to those unable to attend. Contact her at

Mark your calendars now for our next Professional Development session on June 27th: Situational Awareness and Safety.
